Why Is Prayer Important?

​

Prayer is essential for Christians and believers in the Lord Jesus Christ because it is our means of communicating and fellowshipping with God, drawing near to Him, seeking His will, receiving His strength, and participating in His purposes on the earth.

Jesus taught His disciples to pray and declared, "Men ought always to pray, and not to faint" (Luke 18;1, KJV).  Through prayer we are invited to approach God boldly through Christ (Hebrews 4:16), cast our cares upon Him (1 Peter 5:7), receive peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7), and seek His Kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33). 

Prayer also strengthens believers spiritually, helps us overcome temptation (Matthew 26:41), enables us to stand in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:18), and brings believers together in unity and one accord (Acts 1:14; Acts 2:42).

The Bible further teaches that the prayers of God's people are powerful and effective (James 5:16), and that when believers gather and pray in Jesus' name, He is present among them (Matthew 18:19-20). 

Therefore, prayer is not merely a religious duty but a vital relationship with God through Jesus Christ, empowered and guided by the Holy Spirit, through which believers worship, intercede, give thanks, seek direction, and participate in the advancement of the Gospel and the Kingdom of God.

Personal Prayers

​

As a son or daughter of God, personal prayers are the intimate fellowship and communication a believer has with God the Father through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Holy Spirit.  Through Christ, believers habe been given access to the Father and are invited to "come boldly unto the throne of grace" (Hebrews 4:16, KJV).

Jesus taught His disciples to pray personally and privately, saying "enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret" (Matthew 6:6).  Personal prayers are therefore a place of worship, thanksgiving, repentance, surrender petition, listening, seeking God's wisdom, and bringing our deepest concerns before Him (Philippians 4:6-7); James 1:5).  As children of God, we can cry, "Abba, Father," because the Holy Spirit bears witness that we belong to Him (Romans 8:15-16); Galatians 4:6).

Through personal prayers we develop an obedient and trusting relationship with God, learn to seek His Kingdom and His will (Matthew 6:33; Matthew 6:10), receive spiritual strength (Ephesians 3:16), resist temptation (Matthew 26:41), and become increasingly sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit.  

Personal prayers are therefore not simply asking God for what we want; it is abiding in Christ, knowing the Father, being transformed by His presence, and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead our lives according to God's purposes.

Corporate Church Prayers

​

Corporate church prayer is the united fellowship of believers coming together before God the Father through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and in the power of the Holy Spirit.  It is the expression of the body of Christ praying in one accord where individual believers join their voices, hearts and faith in agreement with God's will.  Jesus affirmed the power of such unity when He said, "if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven" and "where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:19-20).

The early church modelled this life of corporate prayer, continuing steadfastly in prayer and fellowship (Acts 2:42), and lifting their voices together to God in times of need, resulting in fresh boldness and the infilling of the Holy Spirit (Acts 4:24-31).  Corporate prayer is therefore an expression of unity in the Spirit, where believers are exhorted to "keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Ephesians 4:3-6) and to be "perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment" (1 Corinthians 1:10).  It is a place where love binds the body together (Colossians 3:14-15) and where God commands His blessing, even life forevermore (Psalm 133:1-3). 

In corporate prayer, the church collectively seeks God's kingdom and will, intercedes for one another, and stands together in faith, demonstrating that they are one body in Christ, led and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
